What to do: before and during a hurricane
Hurricanes are scary things. I can’t say I remember exactly what it feels like to be in one – I was only 4 or 5 when I was caught up in one with my family – but I remember the doomed feeling before it struck…all of us stuck in the house and the certainty in my dad’s eyes that the force was coming and it would be strong.
You never know when you might need some advice on what to do before and during a hurricane, so to that end, I have put together a small guide. See for yourself…
1) It’s all about preparation. You know a hurricane is coming, so you’ll want to make sure your house is secure and you are in the best place. First of all you need to board the windows and make sure that nothing is loose. Then do the same with the roof and make sure it is secure. Your next stop is to make sure things are safely sorted inside the house – things like home heating oil should be kept away from cables and things which could ignite.
A cell phone is a must, and so are sleeping bags and maps…
