Bringing a little more Florida sunshine into your home

posted by admin in Uncategorized

I went back home to Key West for Christmas, and now I’m back in grey old London, I’m thinking of incorporating some bright Florida essence into my house. Don’t get me wrong, I love winter. Florida is pretty much always sunny so I actually really like having different seasons. I love the unpredictability of the weather here in London.

We’ve got at least two or three more months left of cold, wet, sleety and windy weather though, so my partner and I both felt it would be great to bring some of the Key West sunshine back with us.

Too Much Dragon’s Den

posted by admin in Uncategorized

I have begun researching how to turn my passion and love for Key West into something that could possibly look like a sustainable business. I lay it all down to watching too many episodes of Dragon’s Den on the iplayer after the ten o’clock news. My goal is to create a business that I enjoy doing, with something that people would actually want. Of course, it needs to tie in Key West at some crucial point.

I did my initial research informally, just to find out what people associated with Key West. I was surprised to find out that it was a drunken Ernest Hemingway that came to mind. Great, booze, a complicated business, but with the possibility of great financial reward. I located the Tortuga Company as my main competitor. I was really inspired by their packaging and was wondering how I could market my Key West booze in a similar but not identical way. As I was creating a prototype, I contacted a manufacturer of bespoke packaging boxes, to get a quote and a sample of some sort of box that the rum could go in. Brilliant customer service resulted in the idea of a box to hang from the bottle’s neck which was a little treasure chest. As I was researching the ins and outs of producing and importing rum, I kept coming back to the little treasure chest. I started wondering if it would be possible to create a set of toys and board games that featured Key West.

Key West was known for its wreckers. There are tales of people setting beacons just so ships would wreck on the coral reefs that surround the island. A board game that featured wreckers would have a massive market in Key West as tourists would have some history and fun to take home with them. It would be easy to do a special pirate chest shaped box to sell the game in. I priced out a delux edition which featured playing pieces made by local jewellers, hand crafted coins, and dice that were carved from wood. My plan at the moment is to head home on a research and development trip so I can figure out which of these two ideas is more realistic. I am leaning towards the rum at the moment, but I want to make sure that I can develop a quality product that is worthy of the memory of Ernest.

Tax relief

Some companies that exist in our day and age are so big and so financial agile that their strong enough to run nations on their own and at some point of time able to rule the world if we rewind a 100 odd years back, however they are the ones who always have lawyers who are paid millions and millions so that they can get the government to get a tax break from a few years.
However the companies that More

What happened to Rock-the feeling of home

posted by admin in Uncategorized

I arrived in the UK in 2009. I was ready to be overwhelmed with pubs filled with the glory of ancient rock from the 60’s 70’s all the way to the late 90’s - but to a horrible chilling disappointment, their all crowded with nonsensical new hip hop and rap music. The crowd that came with it attracted blonde mindless youth. The rock pubs are however either confined to the corners of London which have an atmosphere of hippies alcoholics More

Taste of Home

My partner has to go to a BACD conference and I am hoping against hope that it will be some place sensible and warm. It is amazing when you leave a home that you love, all of the things that you do to try to remind yourself of a place that is far away. When I first moved here I felt that there would never be anything like picking mangos from your neighbour’s tree, but then I witnessed plum season More

Chinese communism

Ai Weiwei tried to stand up against the close mined communists of China. He ended up in prison where no one knows. He constantly made remarks against communist China which lives in an unrealistic suppressive world, freedom of speech is barred. The Nobel prize winners twitter page fell silent on April 3rd when he allegedly got arrested. The government claims that he had been arrested on grounds of ’economic crimes’. Not sure how his standing up against the government was More

Reasons to love working freelance

Working as a freelance writer can be a challenging job, particularly seeing as there are no benefits like sick pay or paid holidays. It exemplifies the traditional model of working to earn money, without the security of many modern twenty-first century employment protections.

However, one of the main perks of being a freelance article writer is that money can be paid into your bank account at any time of the month, provided you have written a sufficient amount of work. More

‘TAP DJ’ A MUST HAVE IPHONE APP

'TAP DJ’ A MUST HAVE IPHONE APP

Yeah you got it miss home a lot but with the new iPhone apps around I can surely stay in touch without needing any same day loans to visit. One great new app that I like is the ‘Tap DJ’. The new 18.3 MB Tap DJ from the Laan Consulting Group was launched on January 10 2011 and is the newest absolute must have app in the business for all music lovers and DJs.

Tap DJ is extremely well designed and user friendly with a host of innovative features, making it the hottest application for every aspiring DJ – and those professionals who are already established but do not relish carting all their music around with them to every venue.

The Tap DJ will convert your iPod or iPhone into double turntables and it features integrated access to one’s iPod libraries, FX, a nine pad sampler, a three band equaliser, voice recording, pitch control, reverb and echo special effects, cross fading and more, enabling simple but unbelievable mixing creations, scratching and the addition of FX to every one of your best music tracks. It is iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch compatible and requires iOS 4.0 or any later edition.

It is also unbelievably easy to purchase and is offered at an extremely low price for what it is able to achieve, as many of its features are generally only offered on desktop models. Simply open iTunes and download your Tap DJ for under $10.

Although the Tap DJ has been given a five star rating by those in the know, it has two drawbacks. One is that if one has a relatively large library, it is prone to crash; and the second is that the platters shown on the iPhone screen are very small.

I remember sitting in one of those old Key West houses in a wicker chair, drinking a cuban coffee and talking about poetry. This is the enduring image in my mind as I search on the internet for Florida villas to rent. I am hoping to be able to find a place to take a gang of my friends on holiday. The thing that is difficult in taking people you know to a place you love and is also famous More
